Referee Training

Support the game of soccer by becoming a referee!  This is a rewarding way to participate and assist others to play this great game. Opportunities are available for referees beginning at age 13. The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) establishes the training standards for soccer referees in the US. The entry level for new Referees for 2019-2020 will be “Grassroots” (for Rec, Challenge, Travel and Adult Leagues). The former Referee Grades 9, 8 and 7 will no longer exist.

To referee matches for SOCA you must successfully complete the training to become certified with USSF as a new Grassroots Referee.  New Referee certification clinics are also offered around the state.  To see all classes around the state, go to the State Referee Program website at www.vadcsoccerref.com and click on “BECOME A REFEREE” at the top of the page.  Note: clinics in Charlottesville or Augusta will be listed on the state website in the CENTRAL area, while clinics in Harrisonburg or Orange will be listed in the NORTH area, and clinics in Roanoke or Lynchburg are in the WEST area.

ALL NEW REFEREE CLINICS require completion of online modules in advance of the in person “classroom” and “field” clinic sessions.

SPECIAL INFORMATION AS OF AUGUST 19, 2019!!!!

We are finally able to start creating new referee clinics using a new State Referee Program website completed earlier today.  Registration can be completed at www.vadcsoccerref.com using the “Become a Referee” tab at the top of the page.  The website should explain all of the steps necessary.

As I have only one available weekend remaining to teach classes before the seasons begin, I am creating as many options for people as I can.  For this weekend of 8/24/19-8/25/19, we have created three separate clinics, each of which is linked to a 3 hour classroom session (Friday evening, Saturday evening or Sunday morning).  To get certified this coming weekend, you will need to register for one of those clinics and plan to attend that classroom session.  Each of those clinics should list four additional 4 hour field sessions (Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Sunday early afternoon, Sunday late afternoon).  You can attend any one of those four, before or after your classroom session.  I will try to get another clinic created for a classroom session on Monday evening 8/26 from 6:00-9:00 if you cannot make any of the others.

The online training for new youth referees takes about 4-1/2 hours and the system has some deadlines.  We are trying to work around those obstacles.  If you are uncertain whether you can finish the online portion before the deadline, DO NOT PANIC.  Go ahead and register for the earliest classroom session that you can make.  If you have problems or questions, please contact me.

RECERTIFICATION: All existing USSF Referees are required to re-certify annually.  If you have a 2019 badge, you will need to recertify before you can referee in calendar year 2020.   NOTE THAT FIFA HAS MADE CHANGES IN THE LAWS OF THE GAME WHICH HAVE BEEN IN EFFECT SINCE JUNE 1, 2019!!!!!

The former Referee Grades 9, 8 and 7 will no longer exist.

REFEREE Recertification class (5 HOURS)
(Students MUST complete online recertification examination PRIOR to receiving a badge.)
Cost: $70.00 (you must register as an existing referee at www.vadcsoccerref.com)

The “local” referee recertification classes for FALL of 2019 (for 2020 badge) will be posted soon.  We had planned to schedule SIX referee recertification clinics before September of 2019 (four at SOCA, two in Augusta, one in Madison).  None of those have happened.
