Tryouts

Tryout General Information

* Online tryout pre-registration is available via your SOCA account for annual tryouts ONLY

All SOCA tryouts are free, and all age appropriate candidates are welcome.

Players may choose to tryout for one of three levels of play; SOCA’s Elite Travel Program, SOCA’s Regional Premier and Classic Travel Program, and SOCA’s Advanced Recreational Challenge Program. For full descriptions of these programs please visit the Youth Programs page of this website.

One Elite team will be formed in each age group U13-U18 boys and girls and two Premier teams will be formed in each age group U11-U18 boys and girls with one team located in Augusta and one in Charlottesville. Separate tryouts are held in Augusta and Charlottesville.

Players who tryout at an advanced level will be considered for programs at lower levels should they not be selected for the level they aspired to.  However, a player will not be considered for a higher level than the level they are trying out for.   Example: A player trying out for an Elite team may be placed on a Premier team should they not be selected for Elite. A player trying out for Premier may be placed in the Challenge Program should they not make Premier.

There are no special requests in select programs within SOCA. Special requests are honored in Recreational programs only. Team selections and formations are made by the SOCA evaluators, coaches and staff members. Team sizes in the travel program vary by age group and must be within VYSA roster limits. Team sizes in the Challenge Program are fixed by SOCA and uniform throughout the league. The number of teams formed is determined by the quantity and quality of candidates.

Evaluators at tryouts are typically SOCA staff members, coaches or other qualified soccer experts. SOCA seeks the most knowledgeable and committed coaches to serve as evaluators during tryouts. Evaluators are assigned by the Director of Soccer. During Annual Tryouts candidates will be assessed by multiple evaluators assuring a fair and balanced evaluation. Parents are not used to evaluate their own children at Travel Tryouts. Parent Evaluators would at most have very limited contact with their own child at Challenge Tryouts.

Please see the schedule below and note that there are TWO Tryouts per age group. All players are strongly encouraged to attend both tryouts! To be considered for a team a candidate must attend at least one tryout.

There are 3 tryout times per year; Annual Tryouts, Late Tryouts, and Mid-Year Tryouts
